VitamainD and mood disorders

Hi friends,
I have been telling all my patients to take  vitaminD daily and I chech their 25 oh vitD3 levels atleast once.To my surprise, almost 90% of the results come as low or low normal.
Most of the times we thought of vitamin D deficiency as causing rickets.
I read an article recently by Dr.Bruce Ames and Dr.Patrick of February 2014 presented at the federation of society of experimental biology.
As per this research ,suboptimal levels of vit.D are associated wit neurological issues as we see in autistic spectrum disorders.Alteration of neurochemicalz because of vit D deficiency can cause affective disorders.
There is a relationship between. Vitamin D activity and expression of tryptophan hydrolase.
This enzyme is involved in downstream metabolism of tryptophan into serotonin.
Vit D deficiency causes dysphoria which is an early stage of depression.vit D regulates expression of hormones that are associated with mood such as serotonin,oxytocin,vasopressin.Dr.BenBrown,N.D suggests,
1. L tryptophan supplementation which may increase brain serotonin and reduce social anxiety without negative side effects.
2.avoid 5 htp as AI may convert to serotonin in the gut and increase GI inflammation while limiting tryptophan in the brain.
3. Administer L tryptophan with vitD as it will enhance serotonin synthesis in brain and limit its production in gut.
4. VitD will improve oxytocin function.
5. Avoid SSRIs
6.consider vitamin B6, folate,iron,omega3 fatty acids
