Nutritional yeast

RED STAR® Nutritional Yeast is NOT brewer's yeast, a by-product of the brewing industry that has an inferior nutritional profile compared to primary-grown yeast and that must be further processed to remove the bitter taste of hops. Many people find that nutritional yeast has a smoother, more "cheesy" taste than brewer's yeast, which tends to be bitter even after processing. Additionally, because nutritional yeast does not come in contact with barley (like brewer's yeast), it is gluten-free and safe for people with Celiac disease.

Nutritional yeast is NOT torula yeast, a by-product of paper mill waste streams obtained by growing Pichia jadinii on wood sugars.

Nutritional yeast is NOT dairy yeast, or whey yeast, which is obtained by growing Kluyveromyces marxianus using cheese whey or whey permeate. Therefore, it is safe for people with dairy allergies.

Nutritional yeast is NOT an active baking or brewing yeast. It is an inactive yeast grown expressly for its nutritional components.

Nutritional yeast is NOT a genetically modified organism (GMO), unlike some yeast that are used in baking and beer and wine production.
WHAT IS YEAST?Nutritional yeast from red star co website

Yeast are single-celled fungi. As fungi, they are related to other fungi that people are more familiar with, including: edible mushrooms available at the supermarket, common baker's yeast used to leaven bread, common brewer's yeast used to ferment beer, molds that ripen blue cheese, and molds that produce antibiotics for medical and veterinary use. Many consider edible yeast and fungi to be as natural as fruits and vegetables.

WHAT IS PRIMARY-GROWN NUTRITIONAL YEAST?

Primary-grown yeast is cultivated expressly for its nutritional components, rather than being the by-product of another industry such as brewing. Lesaffre derives its primary-grown nutritional yeast from pure strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on a purified nutrient source designed specifically for yeast. After the fermentation process is complete, the yeast is harvested, thoroughly washed, pasteurized and dried on roller drum dryers. The special growth medium and unique drying process are the secrets to the exceptional performance and flavor of RED STAR® Nutritional Yeast.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRIMARY-GROWN NUTRITIONAL YEAST?

Red Star® primary-grown nutritional yeast is an excellent source of protein, containing an average of 50% protein by weight.
